A durable shoe with fantastic grip, comfortable upper sole with toe protection, and excellent lacing system. Enjoy reading our Kailas’ shoe review.
Kailas’ brand entered the international market in 2019 and received especial attention at UTMB 2019 when Scott Hawker, a New Zealand elite trail runner sponsored by Vibram, took third place at UTMB 170km wearing Kailas shoes. Kailas’ company started climbing and mountaineering gear, and you cannot have low standards when it comes to safety equipment. They then expanded to hiking and trail running, while keeping the high-quality standard on their products. This is the first impression you get when you look at the Kailas shoes, a high-quality product. And this is confirmed once you hit the trails!
“A light and grippy trail shoe”
The Fuga Pro is the lightest model (260g for size 9.5) that does not compromise on the outsole with a fantastic grip (certainly one of the best on wet rocks) thanks to a very thin Vibram Megagrip outsole. This allows great traction for speed and brake as well as good durability. We tested the grip on different terrains, soft trail, dry boulders on coasteering, river gorging on river gorging, fast downhills on stairs, and the traction is there!
The patented lacing system is effective in providing good comfort and prevents your toes to hit the shoebox on downhills (saving you from black nails). Cushioning is light with a 6-mm drop, which makes you feel the ground and rocks. An interesting addition is the three fix gaiters (1 more than usual), which better prevents dirt and rock to get in your shoes.
When you look at the overall design, it is hard to not compare with the Salomon Pro, and Kailas has nothing to envy to such brands. The high-end price positions this model among the most expensive trail shoes, yet we give this model a high rating.
The retail price of the Fuga Pro on Kailas online store is US$ 231.
Note: we tested the model by running over 200km on different terrains and weather conditions in Hong Kong.
